February 2025: The Peace Table: Teaching Kids to Repair, Not Just React
Learning doesn’t just happen in the project. It happens in the moments between kids—sharing tools, negotiating roles, and handling disappointment when something doesn’t work the first time.
That’s why we build in a Peace Table. It’s not a punishment spot. It’s a problem-solving spot.
What “agency with guardrails” looks like in real life
- Kids learn language for conflict: what happened, how it felt, and what needs to change.
- We teach respectful listening and taking turns—simple, but powerful.
- We guide campers to create a repair plan: an apology, a compromise, or a new way to share materials.
- This system keeps the classroom emotionally safe, which helps kids take creative risks.
A day at camp, in plain language
Most weeks follow a predictable routine so kids feel safe and confident. Inside that structure, they have real choice.
- Launch: a shared question and a reminder of the guardrails they created.
- Work time: teams build and collaborate, with staff coaching social skills in real-time.
- Peace Table moments: quick, calm repairs so kids can get back to creating.
- Close: reflection that celebrates growth—not perfection.
Why this matters for families
When kids help shape the environment, they take ownership. They learn to collaborate, repair mistakes, and stick with hard problems. And because our camps blend Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (with coding and storytelling woven throughout), kids practice the skills they’ll use in school and in life—without it feeling like another classroom.
