January 2025: Agency with Guardrails: Kids Help Set the Rules at Camp

Parents often ask how we keep a room full of energetic kids both creative and calm. The short answer: we don’t rely on rigid control—and we don’t leave kids to figure it out alone either.

At ESTEAM Learning Labs, we use a simple approach: agency + choice with guardrails. That means students have meaningful choices, and we build the structure that helps those choices work.

What “agency with guardrails” looks like in real life

  • At the start of the week, campers help create the group guardrails: the shared rules everyone agrees to follow.
  • We coach them to name what ‘respect’ looks like in that room—how to talk, how to share materials, and what to do when someone is frustrated.
  • Kids also help define accountability: how they will remind each other respectfully when a rule is forgotten.
  • We use a Peace Table as a designated spot to talk things out when conflicts pop up, with an adult nearby to guide if needed.

A day at camp, in plain language

Most weeks follow a predictable routine so kids feel safe and confident. Inside that structure, they have real choice.

  • Morning Launch: a short Socratic-style question to set the tone and help kids think out loud.
  • Lab time: build, code, design, test, revise—kids learn by doing.
  • Snack and movement breaks: reset bodies and brains.
  • Reflection: what worked, what didn’t, and what we’ll try next.

Why this matters for families

When kids help shape the environment, they take ownership. They learn to collaborate, repair mistakes, and stick with hard problems. And because our camps blend Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (with coding and storytelling woven throughout), kids practice the skills they’ll use in school and in life—without it feeling like another classroom.
